Title of Icebreaker: “Musical Partners”

Grade Level:  2-6

Creative Art: Music; Movement

Modality: Group

Duration: 15 minutes

Materials:

-large classroom with ample space for movement

-index cards (to be filled out before class)

Before class: Write song titles on the back of each index card. Make them in groups of cards so that several people will get the same song.  For example, if you have 20 people in your group, make 4 of one song title, 4 of another and so on until you have 5 different groups. Groups can be, but do not have to be, equal in number. Choose songs that are distinctive and that everyone is likely to be familiar with, some suggestions are:

"Happy Birthday"

"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"

"Mary Had a Little Lamb"

"The Itsy Bitsy Spider"

"The Alphabet Song"

Instruction (10 minutes):

  1. Shuffle the cards and pass them out, one to each member of the group.  Be sure to tell the children to keep their card a secret.

  2. When the game starts, everyone walks around the group humming their song trying to find their “partners.”  Help younger children with their song and don’t be afraid to pair up little ones to help them feel included.

  3. When partners pair up, they must stick together to try to find everyone else in the group.

  4. The game is complete when all students have found their group.

Debrief (5 minutes):

Ask students to describe their experience participating in the activity.  Some questions include:

-How did it feel to sing your song?

-How did it feel to search for your musical partners?

-When you finally found your musical partners, how did you feel?
